New study reveals acne is down to genetics

June 09 2017

Do you suffer from acne? You’re not alone. A colossal 60% of UK women (that’s women, not teenagers) suffer from skin conditions such as spots, blemishes, blackheads and acne. Cosmopolitan states that ‘as many as 41- 54% of us will suffer from acne at some point in our adult lives’. But what is the cause of the most common condition in the Western World?

We’ve heard it all, from hormones to chocolate, to makeup to stress. There are many things that could contribute to acne, but a new study carried out by Dr Huiying Li of David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California - Los Angeles (UCLA) uncovered evidence that acne could all be down to the balance of bacteria on the skin which is controlled by genetics. Yes, you heard correctly, it’s in your genes.

Dr Li and his team enrolled 72 adults onto their study. 38 had acne, 34 did not. After collecting skin follicle samples from each participant, the team used DNA shotgun sequencing to determine the makeup of skin microbiota (the organisms that reside on the skin) for each individual. They found that the adults without acne possessed P.acnes (bacteria that grows deep inside of pores) but they were abundant with genes that halt the colonisation of harmful bacteria on the skin. This stops the overgrowth of the P.acnes, resulting in clear skin. However the adults with acne had higher levels of virulence related genes in their P.acnes. These genes are linked to the production of bacterial toxins that promote inflammation and poor skin health.

So if it’s in your genes, what can you do to stop it?

We offer a 40% glycolic peel from Skinceuticals, which is proven to cure acne by using glycolic acid applied as a chemical solution to the surface of the skin to produce the careful removal of its outer layers. As the acid exfoliates the skin deeper than general exfoliants, the peel prevents the build-up of dead skin cells and removes the bacterial toxins that sit on your skin.

We also offer Genuine Dermaroller Therapy, an advanced micro-medical skin-needling procedure that stimulates the skin to regenerate and repair itself naturally and safely. The Dermaroller contains hundreds of tiny needles, which create micro-injuries on the skin. This sends collagen and elastin production into overdrive to compensate as it heals, leaving you with fresh new skin.
