Over the last decade, skin peels have become increasingly popular. We have seen celebs such as Bella Thorne and Gwyneth Paltrow swear by them to refresh and rejuvenate skin for a youthful glow. When your skin is troubled, it makes sense to start again. These peels have a very long list of benefits including: overall improvement of tone and texture, reduction of sun damage and age spots, reduction of pore size, fine lines and wrinkles, and even the reduction or elimination of hyper-pigmentation, acne scars and acne problems.
With this list of benefits, it’s no wonder these peels are all the rage. Due to a high demand, sellers have taken to Ebay to flog cheap skin peels for as little as £11. But these products come with a higher price as reports emerge that consumers have suffered damaging facial burns.
These products are being advertised as medical-grade chemical peels, but contain up to 100% pure acid and even UK banned substances.
Hannah Smith of Wiltshire fell victim to this ploy, and was left ‘in agony’ after using a rogue product bought from Ebay. Hannah told The Daily Mail, “It was a starter kit, so it wasn’t meant to be dangerous, but within seconds it felt like my face was on fire. There were lesions eating away at my face. I couldn’t go to work for nine days.” Hannah was later told by her doctor that she was lucky that she didn’t need surgery.
Campaign group, Safety In Beauty, founder Antonia Mariconda told the newspaper, “We have had 27 reports of chemical peels going wrong in the past 12 months alone – it is a huge concern for us.” Mariconda described the damage of using these products as “tantamount to an acid attack.”
Although an Ebay spokesperson has said these products have been removed in the UK, they can still be found online across other websites, and even at car boot sales.
The campaign group founder, Mariconda, urges people seeking treatment to ‘always see a professional’. At Cardiff Beauty Clinic, our medically trained professionals use The Perfect Peel, a 5-acid blended peel with glutathione, vitamins and minerals. We also offer a GL Peel (glycolic peel), particularly great for those suffering with acne.
